How the Writing Center Can Help You

  • Information for Syllabi

Students are more likely to visit the Writing Center if they know their professors approve. If you would like to encourage your students to use the Writing Center, feel free to include (or adapt) the following paragraph in your syllabi and/or Canvas sites:

The Writing Center at the University of Miami strives to help all members of the university community learn more about writing and become better writers. Their professional and friendly consultants work with writers in one-to-one consultations on all stages of the writing process, from note-taking and pre-writing to revision and proofreading.

To make an appointment, call (305) 284-2956 or visit the Writing Center website.

  • Teaching with Writing Modules

If you’re interested in learning more about using writing in your teaching, we have created a series of modules on relevant topics.

    Modules

The Department of Writing Studies has put together short resource modules to assist any instructor who wants to add, revisit, or update writing assignments in their courses.

  • Partner Labs

The Writing Center offers instructors the option to link their classes to a one-credit lab that will support students with substantial writing requirements. Writing Center administrators will coordinate with the faculty member to provide guidance that helps students keep up with the writing work of the class and meet the instructor’s expectations.

If you would like your class to be linked to a Writing Center lab, please contact April Mann (a.mann@miami.edu) or Adina Sanchez-Garcia (atsgarcia@miami.edu).

  • Faculty Working Group: AI Writing Tools in the Classroom

Join faculty from around the university to share strategies, approaches, challenges, and opportunities when assigning writing assignments in the era of generative artificial intelligences such as ChatGPT. We meet bi-weekly during the fall and spring semesters.

  • Summer Writing Institute

The Summer Writing Institute provides full-time faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences with tools and strategies to further integrate writing instruction into content-based classes. Faculty members from other schools and colleges are welcome to apply.

The Summer Writing Institute is based on the philosophy that writing provides a unique way of learning and understanding discipline-specific information. The Institute selects fellows from across disciplines to participate in a 5-day workshop designed to provide tools and strategies for weaving meaningful writing tasks in their courses. The Institute is conducted by writing faculty who will continue to provide support to the fellows throughout the fall semester as they implement changes to their classes.

If you are interested in attending the Summer Writing Institute or would like more information, please contact April Mann (a.mann@miami.edu) or Adina Sanchez-Garcia (atsgarcia@miami.edu).

  • Individual Consultations
